Transforming Waste into Energy and Resources the Uttarakhand Story
How GasPros® designed decentralized, carbon-neutral waste solutions for hotels, temples, campuses, and industries — making zero waste an achievable reality.
Project Overview
The Challenge: : High Waste, High Impact Sectors
Uttarakhand, with its 1,388 hotels & resorts, 132 temples, and several universities and industries, generates over 500 tons per day (TPD) of solid waste from bulk waste generators (BWGs). Traditionally, this waste would increase landfill burden and greenhouse gas emissions — conflicting with sustainable tourism and environmental conservation goals.
GasPros® identified this as an opportunity: to enable BWGs to manage waste onsite, recover energy and compost, and move toward zero waste in compliance with SWM Rules 2016.
Our Intervention
Carbon-Neutral: Decentralized WTRR Solutions
GasPros® deployed a series of off-the-shelf (OTS) and knockdown biogas and resource recovery systems.
Models included small rooftop units (1.2–10 m³ capacity) and larger medium-sized systems for hotels, temples, and campuses.
Require no external power
Are portable, modular, and easy to install (within 8 hours)
Convert kitchen, floral, and organic waste
Biogas for cooking and heating
Liquid fermented compost (LFC) for landscaping and agriculture
Target Opportunity & Scale
Building an Ecosystem for Success
The business model leverages carbon credits, reduced operational costs, and resource sales to create an attractive ROI.
Annual plan: Treat ~125 TPD of waste
Investment: ₹3.5 crore; consideration ₹2.5 crore
Sales value: ₹20.5 crore
Market potential: 1,388 hotels & resorts, 132 temples, 18 university campuses, and industries
Timeline: 12 months
Outcomes & Impact
From Waste Burden to : Resource Opportunity
Diverted significant organic waste from landfills
Reduced carbon emissions by capturing methane as biogas
Provided reliable, zero-carbon cooking fuel for bulk waste generators
Produced local organic compost, improving soil health and reducing chemical fertilizer use
Supported compliance with Solid Waste Management Rules (SWM) 2016
Enabled quick, scalable implementation through modular design
Beyond Technology: Governance & Compliance
Partnering with ULBs for , Lasting Change
To succeed, GasPros® recommended:
Formation of waste management cells within ULBs
Identification and inventory of BWGs
Enforcing SWM Rules 2016 compliance
Implementing penalties to drive participation
Conclusion
Towards Zero Waste — Uttarakhand
By combining technology, governance, and business models, GasPros® proved that decentralized, zero-energy WTRR systems can transform the state’s high-waste sectors into climate-smart, resource-positive hubs — protecting the natural beauty of Uttarakhand while driving economic and environmental benefits.
